Business Mentors New Zealand is a business support service offered as part of the Regional Business Partners Network.
Business people who would like advice and/or guidance with their business are invited to register for a Business Mentor. Often this is just to gain a fresh approach or have a sounding board to bounce new ideas. Sometimes it’s to help avoid common pitfalls, and/or be held accountable to someone outside their normal support network.
Business Mentors New Zealand offers three programmes:
- Business Mentors for SME businesses who are currently trading and have less than 25 employees
- Start-up Mentors for those who have a new business idea or looking to start a new business
- Community Mentors for key personnel of not-for-profit organisations.
Mentors volunteer their time, but a registration fee is required to cover some operational costs of the programmes. Once registration is received, you will be matched with a mentor that best suits your industry and needs.
Your mentor will provide you with independent, impartial advice that may challenge you to go further, set new business goals, and achieve better results. You may experience peace of mind, increased business confidence, and inspiration as a result, or you may wish to use business mentoring to get a fresh perspective about your business ideas. A mentor can provide vital assistance in identifying business strategies and opportunities for growth, and sometimes help to implement improvements.
The level of success you achieve from your mentoring relationship depends on the level of commitment you make to it.

A business mentor can help you step outside the day to day running of your business to take a look at your business as a whole and see the opportunities and issues you face, or potentially will face.
“The best thing about having a mentor is it instils discipline to give time and attention to work on your business. A mentor is not going to train you, or write you a business plan, nor do they necessarily have the magic answer. What they will do however is support your decision making," says Business Mentors New Zealand personnel.
While a mentor may not know everything about your type of business they will likely know where you should go for research or to get answers and they will help you identify gaps that may need addressing.
“A good mentor is someone who is patient, has good general business experience in either their own business or a senior management role, and someone who can go in quietly and offer support. They need to understand the business quickly, focus on what the business is about and the skill levels of the business owner.”
Anyone who is trading and has a financial history can apply for a mentor. While there is no time limit as to how long the business has been operating, you must have at least made some sales.
Business Mentors New Zealand has started something new in its mentoring service, and now offers a service to start-up businesses. This is where a mentor works with the client to get their business up and running.
